Kōrero mō te tūranga – About the role
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) – Infection Prevention & Control provides specialist nursing advice, care and expertise, both in directing patient care and alongside staff delivering services to patients within Health New Zealand /Te Whatu Ora-Capital,Coast and Hutt Valley District, PHO, ARC and other Community facilities on request. The focus is on providing leadership to direct and support implementation of the infection prevention & control programme through role modelling expert clinical skills, promoting best practice, facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration and providing education.
The role ensures infectious control policies and procedures are carried out in accordance with the Infection Control Standard (NZS 8134.3:2008), and ensures evaluation through audit programmes are carried out. The role works closely with other members of the infection prevention & control team, including the Infectious Diseases Physician and Laboratory staff.
Mō tō mātou rōpū – About our team
Infection Prevention and Control is placed within the Infection Service, and provides an integrated infection prevention and control consultative and advisory service across the hospital and healthcare arm of the District by providing consultation, liaison, expert advice and knowledge as requested.
Infection Prevention and Control consists of nine part time and full time Clinical Nurse Specialists, CNM and a part time Infectious Disease Consultant and provides services to all areas of Capital and Coast, including, but not limited to, inpatient and outpatient care, ambulatory settings, community services, external contractors to Te Whatu Ora-Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley, long-term care facilities and PHO’s.
The service aims to minimise the spread of healthcare-associated infection in accordance with NZS8134.3:2008 within Capital Coast through:
- Education of staff at all levels and disciplines
- Surveillance and research
- Policy development
- Provision of timely and evidence-based advice
- Development and review of the infection control programme in line with quality processes

Moū – About you
The ideal candidate will already have:
- Registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand as an RN and has a current APC
- Relevant post-graduate qualification and holds Senior/Expert on PDRP or working towards this in an agreed timeframe.
- Significant nursing experience and knowledge in Infection Prevention and Control with a demonstrated high level of clinical competence and autonomy.
- Experience in using research, project management and quality improvement.
- Ability to use information technology
- An ability to present to groups/individuals and experience in health education across different sectors and discipline.
- Demonstrated ability and an interest in data collection and analysis
- An ability to contribute to policy review and network widely in the organisation including primary care, ARC and other community providers.
