Health Care Assistant - Plastics and Outpatients

Contract: Permanent, Part Time 0.8 FTE Rostered and Rotating

About the Role

In the Plastics Outpatients department and Procedure Suite this position will support the nursing teams to provide an effective practice environment. 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Stock taking, ordering supplies and maintaining stock levels in Plastics Outpatients     and the Procedure Suite 
  • House keeping and ensuring areas are kept clean and tidy
  • Ensuring high quality patient care and consistency of standards are delivered within the expectations of best practice and organisational policy
  • Preparing patients for their local anaesthetic procedures and running clinics under the direction and delegation of a registered nurse
  • You will need to be able to readily build rapport with patients, clinicians and other staff to achieve quality outcomes for patients. 
  • The Health Care Assistant may also be required to undertake a specific area of responsibility, as assigned by their manager.
  • Quality practice and improved patient safety is an important part of this role. 

The HCA is expected to contribute to the implementation of District and nursing goals and values and to promote Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley as a centre of excellence for nursing practice.

About the Team/Service/ Location

Hutt Hospital, located in Lower Hutt, is a busy 270 bed General District Hospital.   

The Procedure Suite is a growing, multi-specialty ambulatory service offering minor procedures under local and regional anaesthesia, and sedation for dental procedures.  Specialties include Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Dentistry, Dermatology, and Regional Plastic Surgery.

The department includes two consultation rooms, five surgical procedure rooms and an observation area.  There is a core team consisting of an Associate Clinical Nurse manager and three nurses, a health care assistant and administration officer who you will be working alongside.

Within the Plastics Outpatients setting there is a team of one CNM, six nurses, a health care assistant, seven medical secretaries and two receptionists who you will be working alongside. There are also nurse specialists who specialise in various aspects of the Plastic Surgical service.

About you

You must have:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 3)
  • 2 years Health Care Assistant experience within a hospital setting is desirable
  • Experience working in a theatre environment is desirable
  • Excellent communication skills and enjoy working as part of a team
