Mental Health Liaison Nurse – Emergency Department

Contract: Permanent Full Time. Rostered & rotating (hours/days to be negotiated)

About the role

The Mental Health Addictions & Intellectual Disability Service MHAIDS Emergency Department Liaison Nurse is based in the Hutt Hospital Emergency Department (ED).

The main purpose of the role is to provide rapid prioritisation/triage for people who present to the Emergency Department with suspected mental health problems, and to facilitate access to the right service at the right time. You will report to the Team Leader, Te Haika and have the ability to build strong relationships with key stakeholders including but not limited to ED Consultants, ED nursing staff, NZ Police and the Crisis Resolution Service.

Duties

  • Provide a brief, rapid mental health triage, prioritising an assessment of mental state, risk and urgency to determine care planning and linkages to other services
  • Work with other mental health services to ensure assessment, treatment and discharge/transfer is timely and effective.
  • Work alongside existing triage services, including Te Haika and the Crisis Resolution Service, and escalate high acuity cases and Mental Health Act queries directly to the Crisis Resolution Service
  • Provide more formal training to ED staff (e.g. presentations, workshops) on the recognition and management of people who present with mental health problems.

Skills and Experience

  • High level of experience working in a DHB mental health team (preferably a crisis and/or community mental health team)
  • Bachelor of Nursing or higher level equivalent (e.g Post Grad Diploma in specialist area; Masters of Nursing)
  • Registered with New Zealand Nursing Council
  • (Minimum) competent on Nursing PDRP, ideally expert

Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Service MHAIDS spans three DHBs - Wairarapa, Hutt Valley and Capital and Coast DHB’s and includes local, regional, and national services. The local MHAID services are provided from multiple sites within the 3DHB sub-region – greater Wellington, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa.

Te Korowai Whariki services include regional forensic and rehabilitation services covering the Central region while the intellectual disability services extend the length and breadth of the country from six bases located in Whangarei, Auckland, Cambridge, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin.
