Nurse Educator - General Surgery and Gynaecology

About the Role 

We are seeking a Registered Nurse or Nurse Educator with strong clinical knowledge and proven experience in training delivery, staff development, and coaching. This Nurse Educator role supports our General Surgery and Gynaecology (GSG) ward by leading high quality education, promoting best practice, and guiding our nursing team to deliver safe, evidence based patient care. The ideal candidate will bring confidence in adult learning principles, excellent communication skills, and a passion for fostering a positive learning culture within a fast paced surgical environment.

The General Surgery and Gynaecology (GSG) ward at Hutt Hospital in Lower Hutt is a 27 bed inpatient surgical unit caring for patients undergoing both general surgical and gynaecological treatment. The ward manages a wide range of acute admissions, postoperative recovery, and elective surgical pathways, making it one of the hospital’s busiest and most clinically diverse areas.

You will join the Hutt Valley Nurse Educator team that consists of 17 experienced Nurse Educators who provide education and professional support across the hospital. The team is led by the Charge Nurse Manager Education and works closely with the Workforce and Practice Development Unit (W&PDU) to maintain a strong culture of continuous learning, capability development, and evidence based practice. This collaborative approach ensures our nursing workforce is well supported and equipped to deliver safe, high quality care to our community.

About you 

You will bring strong clinical expertise, a passion for education and a commitment to developing a safe and capable GSG nursing workforce. You will have:

  • Registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and a current Annual Practising Certificate with a scope appropriate to the area of practice
  • Extensive General Surgery and Gynaecology clinical experience, with expert assessment, teaching and coaching skills
  • Minimum three years post graduate nursing experience in General Surgery and Gynaecology or Acute setting e.g. Emergency, ICU and relevant clinical certification or technical expertise
  • Experience in planning and delivering education, including supporting staff in clinical environments
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, good organisation and the ability to work collaboratively across teams
  • Demonstrated understanding of obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the ability to apply these meaningfully in a senior nursing role
  • A commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for all population groups
  • A relevant postgraduate qualification or working towards.
  • A qualification in adult education or willingness to work towards this within an agreed timeframe
  • A current PDRP 
  • A commitment to ongoing professional development and continuous learning
